BERT JANSCH 3/11/1943-5/10/2011

Κατ’ ουσίαν επρόκειτο για μία πρόγευση από το βιβλίο τού Harper “Dazzling Stranger, Bert Jansch and the british folk and blues revival” [εκδ.
“We all sang political songs” says Dolina MacLennan (σ.σ. folkist γεννημένη στις Εβρίδες με εγγραφές στην Topic). “We all sang the anti-Polaris songs and anti-royalty songs”. Except Bert Jansch. But then Bert was not singing anything much at all in public at the time. To some of the younger singers, revolution was just another topic of pub conversation. “Archie Fisher and I were the first two folkies in Glasgow who weren’t graduates from the Young Communists’ Choir”, says Hamish Imlach (σ.σ. “That’s not a joke, that’s a statement of fact!”. He also recalled one occasion where he (Hamish Imlach), Archie Fisher and Josh MacRae (σ.σ. σκωτσέζοι τραγουδοποιοί) sang for the Young Communists and the Young Conservatives on the same night.

Of all the clubs in Fife (σ.σ. περιοχή στην ανατολική Σκωτία), he was only ever invited to play at one: the Dunfermline Howff. In Glasgow, Bert Jansch would quickly build an audience but it would not be a completely smooth process. Folksong was a working-class, increasingly young person’s music and any young performer on the scene in those days would be expected to fit into one of two camps; traditional music or contemporary songs espousing the correct political values. Robin Williamson and Bert Jansch were unusual in being markedly non-political. Robin, whose traditional bent at that stage opened up many more bookings than would be offered to Bert in the Scottish clubs, recalls a lot of his own early work being promoted by the Communist Party.

By the summer of 1966, Bert Jansch was the veteran of at least seven concerts, mostly organized by Bruce Dunnet (σ.σ. σημαντική «πίσω» μορφή του british folk, ιδιοκτήτης κλαμπ, εδώ μια νεκρολογία http://is.gd/Z2Jx8L) and all of them multi-artist affairs with his name rising gradually up the billing. He had recently endorsed the Folksingers Committee For Peace In Vietnam, another of Dunnet’s many guises. On 1 August 1966, on a bill topped by the Dubliners, Bert Jansch took the stage directly after Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger in the committee’s first Peace in Vietnam concert at London’s Unity Theatre. If nothing else, the concert brought under one roof all sections of the folk community and introduced, in Karl Dallas’s words (σ.σ. μαρξιστής συγγραφέας, τραγουδοποιός, ποιητής και εκδότης), “an interesting new girl singer called Sandy Denny”. Later that month, with the Beatles’ Revolver topping the mainstream UK album chart, “Bert and John” (σ.σ. το τέταρτο LP του Bert Jansch, εδώ μαζί με τον John Renbourn, από το 1966) and “Jack Orion” (σ.σ. το τρίτο LP του Jansch από το 1966) were at Nos 1 and 2 in the Melody Maker folk chart, compiled from sales at the major specialist stores. The time was now right for Bert Jansch to try the concert halls on his own.

  2. Πριν κάποιες μέρες άκουγα ένα τελευταίο CD του Lol Coxhill, το “Fine Tuning, The Gradisca Concert” [Amirani AMR 024] – συνεργασία με τον κιθαρίστα Enzo Rocco. Εκεί υπάρχουν τρία κομμάτια – το “Two little pigeons”, το γνωστό από τον Mike Oldfield “Don Alfonso”, το “Open Piccadilly” –, τα οποία αποδίδουν ο Lol Coxhill στο σοπράνο και ο David Bedford στο πιάνο (τραγουδούν κιόλας).
